About Father John Misty
Father John Misty is an American musician, singer-songwriter, and record producer. He’s also known under his original stage name, J. Tillman, which was used for his early work.
Father John Misty’s introduction to music came at an early age as he was learning to play drums and guitar at an early age. He grew up in a deeply religious household which limited his access to secular culture and music. In fact, it wasn’t until he was 17 when his parents allowed him to listen to non-Christian and hymnal music, but only if it had a spiritual theme. So a lot of his early music purchases and influences were albums like Bob Dylan’s Slow Train Coming, but only because he managed to convince his parents that Bob Dylan was a “Christian Artist.”
When he was finally able to step out on his own, he began recording music in earnest. In the early 2000s, he kept up a steady output of solo recordings and was either a permanent or touring member of several bands including: Demon Hunter, Saxon Shore, Fleet Foxes, and Jeffertitti’s Nile. He has also toured with several artists including Damien Jurado, Jesse Sykes, and David Bazan. In addition, he has made contributions to albums by mainstream artists including Lady Gaga and Beyoncé.
Musical style
As Father John Misty developed into his own musical identity, his work took on a style that has been described as indie rock. Some artists and critics note that he also teases influence from indie folk, folk rock, chamber pop, soft rock, and a dash of country here and there. This blending of styles gives him a unique sound that has been celebrated by his fans across the world.
